Red Sox Announce Carson Smith Will Have Tommy John Surgery

It was over before it even really started.

The Red Sox have announced that right-handed pitcher Carson Smith will undergo ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery (Tommy John) on his right elbow on Tuesday, May 24th.

Smith will head to New York City, New York where his surgery will take place at the Hospital for Speical Surgery and will be done by Dr. David.

Smith pitched only 2.2 innings this season for the Red Sox, with a 0.00 ERA and 1.125 WHIP.

Smith was expected to play a pivotal role in Red Sox bullpen this season after being acquired in a trade that sent Wade Miley to Seattle. Smith has a career ERA of 2.00 with a .98 WHIP after two years of big league play in Seattle. Smith emerged last season in the Mariners bullpen, pitching 70 of his 81 career innings, with a 2.31 ERA and 92 strikeouts.
