Bruins GM Don Sweeney announced Tuesday, May 24th, that the team has resigned defenseman Kevan Miller to a four-year contract extension worth 2.5mm per season for a total of 10 million. The team also announced the signing of Seth Griffith to a one-year, two-way contract through the 2016-17 season at $625,000 per year.
The 28-year-old former University of Vermont Captain has played three seasons in Boston, playing in 159 games with 8 goals and 23 assists for 31 points.
Miller had a career year this past season in Boston posting the second-best plus/minus rating on the team (+15), playing in a career high 71 games as well as career highs in goals (5), assists (13), points (18) and penalty minutes (53).
Griffith, played four games for the Bruins this season, adding one assist. Griffith was a first team AHL all star after finishing first in the league in assists (53), and second in goals (24). The 23-year-old has played 38 NHL games during his time with the Bruins, and hopes to fight for a bottom six forward spot next season.
After locking up Miller, the team now has 15.9mm locked into just four defenseman for the upcoming year in Zdeno Chara (6.9mm), Dennis Seidenberg (4mm), Adam McQuaid (2.75mm) and Kevan Miller (2.25mm).
15 million is a lot to have invested into two aging defenseman and two injury prone defenseman, isn’t it? The Bruins biggest problem this season was defense, with out a doubt. During Claude Julien’s tenure, defense has really never been a problem, ranking in the top 10 every season, expect this past season where the team ranked 13th in the league in goals allowed with 228.
Bruins fans better hope for a trade, because by the looks of things, the defense will have a very similar look next year, as it did this year.
